Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a certificate issued by a designated government authority that verifies the authenticity of a public official’s signature and seal on a document.

It is used when documents are being presented in a country that is a member of the Hague Conference on Private International Law and party to the Hague Apostille Convention.

An apostille makes your document legally recognized in another participating country without further authentication.

What is the difference between an apostille and legalization?

The difference depends on the destination country.

  • Apostille: Used for countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.
  • Legalization: Required for countries that are not part of the Convention.

Legalization typically involves:

  1. State certification
  2. U.S. Department of State authentication (if required)
  3. Embassy or consulate legalization

Express Apostille Services determines the correct process before submission to prevent delays or rejection.

Do my documents need to be original?

It depends on the document type.

  • Vital records (birth, marriage, death certificates) typically must be certified copies issued by the appropriate state authority.
  • Corporate documents may need to be state-issued or properly notarized.
  • Personal documents often require notarization before apostille.

We review documents before submission to ensure they meet requirements.
